Defending the Truth in a Postmodern World: Socio-Ideological Analysis of the Film “Don’t Look Up”

In the film Don’t Look Up, produced in 2021 and directed by Adam McKay, the efforts of two scientists to persuade society and state administrators, who noticed a comet that would crash into the world, are told through political satire. The main conflict of the film arises from the American society living in the post-truth society, which emerged as a result of the postmodern era, rejecting the objective truth presented by the two scientists because it is not ‘entertaining’ or beneficial for them. The socio-cultural structure of the society they are trying to persuade is focused on entertainment and consumption, and everyone is trying to build their own social realities away from the objective facts of truth. Capitalist ideology, whose actions are invisible in postmodern times, is shown as the reason for the impossibility of creating consensus in the face of an objective truth that will destroy the whole world and humanity, and the impossibility of getting out of the deadlock the society is in, because its existence is accepted as a norm. Capital owners hide the class conflict by putting the society into a conspicuous consumption spiral within the comfort of technological determinism, direct the politics in line with their own interests and demassification of the society. In this study, the historical transformation of the perception that subjective beliefs are superior to objective beliefs in the post-truth period, which leads to the rejection of the truth and becomes a destructive price-paying process, is examined. In addition, Don’t Look Up, which conveys the encounter of capitalist ideology and plain truth, is examined through the conceptual frameworks of postmodernity, capitalist ideology, consumer society and spectacle society.
Adam McKay’in yönetmenliğini üstlendiği 2021 yılı yapımı Don’t Look Up (Yukarı Bakma) filminde dünyaya çarpacak bir kuyrukluyıldızı fark eden iki bilim insanının toplumu ve devlet yöneticilerini ikna çabaları politik hiciv yoluyla anlatılmaktadır. Filmin temel çatışmasını oluşturan unsur, postmodern dönemin bir sonucu olarak ortaya çıkan hakikat sonrası çağda yaşayan Amerikan toplumunun, iki bilim insanının sundukları nesnel hakikati ‘eğlenceli’ veya kendilerine yönelik bir faydası olmamasından ötürü reddetmelerinden doğmaktadır. İkna etmeye çalıştıkları toplumun sosyokültürel yapısı, gösteri ve tüketim odaklı bir haldedir ve hakikatin nesnel olgularından uzaklaşmış bir biçimde herkes kendi sosyal gerçekliklerini inşa etmeye çalışmaktadır. Tüm dünyayı ve insanlığı yok edecek bir nesnel hakikat karşısında konsensüs yaratmanın ve toplumun içinde bulunduğu açmazdan çıkmanın imkansızlığının sebebi olarak varlığı bir norm olarak kabul edildiği için eylemleri görünmez olan kapitalist ideoloji gösterilir. Sermaye sahipleri, toplumu teknolojik determinizmin yarattığı konforun içerisinde gösterişçi bir tüketim sarmalına sokarak sınıf çatışmasını gizlemekte, siyaseti kendi çıkarları doğrultusunda yönlendirmekte ve toplumu kitlesizleştirmektedir. Bu çalışmada, filmde belirtilen hakikat sonrası dönemde öznel inançların nesnel inançlara karşı üstün olduğuna dair algının, hakikati reddetmeye yol açan ve yıkıcı bir bedel ödeme süreci haline gelen tarihsel dönüşümü irdelenmiştir. Ayrıca, kapitalist ideolojiyle yalın hakikatin karşılaşmasını aktaran filmin postmodernite, kapitalist ideoloji, tüketim toplumu ve gösteri toplumu kavramsal çerçeveleri üzerinden incelenmesi de gerçekleştirilmiştir.
